From consuming cereals in large quantities in the past, Indians, over the next two decades, would move towards milk and milk products in large quantities followed by fruits, vegetables, meat and fish. India now ranks as the world's largest milk-producing country followed by US and Russia. Moreover, milk has been a part of the traditional Indian diet. In the last 28 years, Indians have already touched the WTO norms of daily milk consumption of220 gms of milk per person from 111 gms in 1973. Consumption of cereals has been declining across several states in India barring Kerala, West Bengal and Orissa. The consumption of non-cereal food such as milk, eggs, meat, fruits and vegetables has been highest in the state of Punjab and Haryana.

In India milk and milk products are likely to witness the highest growth by 2020 from the present consumption in comparison to other diets.
